Fishy Business
i read this article on the newspapers today, it made me feel like i wanna fight for its cause. yeah like i can hear the reader go "whatever"!
so they might bring (probably have) in those GM fishes that can glow in the dark and come in pretty colors... oooohhhhhh ahhhhh.... so they will be beautifying your aquariums quite soon. How nice would it be to see little sparks of neon light moving when u switch off all your lights..... i suppose it would be magical.. the effect similar to sitting under the stars. Rite. or so you thought. To all those aquarium lovers out there, me inclusive... what if, just what if one day u find that the pretty little neon thing isn't as simple as it really is. I mean, since it is GM, no one noes its 'side-effects' and its characteristics..often coined as 'frankenfish'... such aliens that are introduced to our eco-system may do more than just decoration, they may interbreed with the normal fishes or eat them and because only the fittest survive.. the normal fishes are driven to extinction. yeah it sounds a tad bit exaggerating BUT what if they really drive all the natural inhabitants to extinction.. are we powerful enough to play god to the other creatures on this planet?
side effects aside, what if these fishes harms the environment, they may emit strange toxins and this in turn may harm humans. After all, they have been GMed, so who know's what will happen next?
For now, they are restricted to the tanks in your homes, next time they may be in a pond near the park. If beautifying your tank is done at the risk of your other pets, water plants etc, don't regret the next time u find that $100 guppy missing.
P.S: GM stands for Genetically Modified, just in case u didn't know.
